patchwork dog pillow -- tutorial

DSC07021

This is a tutorial to make a patchwork dog pillow like the one pictured above. To make the pillow you will need:

4mm hook (G)
various worsted weight yarns, amount depends on how many colors you use
stuffing (to stuff pillow)
a sewing needle

To start you will need to make 54 squares using this pattern. You can use any granny square pattern to make this pillow though.

After you have all your squares finished, you'll want to lay your squares out in the shape of the dog (pictured below) for each side. They should mirror each other. Place the squares right sides together and using your crochet hook & yarn, join with a slip stitch through the back loops.

Now you should have both sides of you pillow finished. My squares look a little wonky but they'll be worked out during stuffing.

Now you will be making the strip of squares that joins the two sides together, you will need 30 squares. I made mine in all one color but you can continue the patchwork look if you'd like. I did the join as you go method for these squares to save on sewing afterwards. If you don't know how to join as you go, here is a great tutorial.

I didn't get any pictures for this next part unfotunately but I think you can figure it out without the visuals. You're going to take one side of your pillow and join the strip of 30 squares that you just crocheted to the outside edges, place the right sides together and slip stitch through all the backloops, make sure your squares line up properly. Now grab your other piece to the pillow and do the same with the other side of the strip, leave about 3 squares open for turning right side out. Once it's turned right side out, stuff your pillow and whip stitch the opening closed.

Now you have a finished patchwork dog pillow! Plop it on your couch, bed or wherever and enjoy!

I hope that makes sense! After writing it all out (especially the joining both sides part), I'm thinking of making another so I can get better step by step pictures! I ran out of decent light when finishing up this one, so I didn't get many great shots. If you make one, I hope you'll share a photo!

Have been wanting to make this since seeing it on Pinterest. Would you mind if i altered the ears to floppy ears?
Many thanks for this lovely pattern :-)
i made pillows very close to these about 30 years ago and have hunted for a pattern for about 10 years now. thank you so very much for this. i can now make these for my gran kids.
About 30 years ago I made this as part of baby shower gifts. They were a big hit. About a month ago I was thinking about them. I did a search and could not find it. One of my friend posted the pattern on face book. I am a very happy lady. I am making some for my twin granddaughter (3 years old) and one for my great niece (4 years and great nephew (6 month old) .
So adorable, Casey!
I love your crocheted dog! If I get around to it, I am totally making one for my son for Christmas. He loves dogs, and I love to crochet, win-win! I am featuring your project on my blog tomorrow. http://www.theexperimentalhome.com/check-in-check...
What is the size of each of your squares? I love this and want to estimate yardage etc.
So happy I found this. My grandmother used to make dog pillows very similar except that hers were hand sewn not crocheted. She'd make them for the kids in our family and now that she has passed away it has made us sad that none of our kids will get them. This will be a great way for me to keep the tradition going but with a little twist. Thank you thank you thank you!
I just finished crocheting this dog. It's so cute! My daughter really likes it.Thank you for sharing this awesome pattern :D
Thank you so much fot this cute pattern!!
Thanks for sharing the post.
Thanks for sharing the tutorial and I have watched the tutorial and all the steps of making pillow are so easy. The patchwork is so good and it is showing a great finishing look of pillow. The patters which are being used are good and nice.
I always love the patch work on things such as cloths and pillows and bed sheets. The way you have done this woolen patchwork on the pillow and shaped it like a dog, it's amazing. The thing is it is more of a stuff toy for bed room then a pillow.
I just finished my Scottie using your pattern! Thank you so much for sharing it! http://thebunnymama.blogspot.co.uk/2016/02/wip-fr...
appreciable work you have done and wonderful blog you have posted.thanks a lot for sharing your speechless experiences with us.

Hi Casey I made 2 Patchwork Dog Pillow. The first one I made for my Great Grandson who was 4months old on December 23 2020. Also my Great Great Nephew who was six months old. Christmas this year 2020. I am so pleased with this project. I want to send you a picture of both the Dog Pillows but havent figured out how to do it. I have been thinking of other colours I could use to make another dog just in case we get a baby girl in our family. I am hoping to hear from you. Thank you for a great Pattern. Sincerely Donna Taylor Dorchester Ontario Canada. I hope you can let me know how to send a picture to you of my finished product. By the way Babies and parents just loved the Doggies.
